Alan M. Garber is the Henry J. Kaiser Jr. Professor, as well as a professor of medicine, professor (by courtesy) of economics and professor (by courtesy) of health research and policy at Stanford University. He is also a professor (by courtesy) of economics in the Graduate School of Business at Stanford. He has been director of the university’s Center for Health Policy and Center for Primary Care and Outcomes Research since their founding in 1998. He is a staff physician at the Veterans Affairs Palo Alto Health Care System.
Garber received his bachelor’s degree summa cum laude and his Ph.D. in economics at
Harvard, as well as an M.D. with research honors at Stanford. He received the Young Investigator Award of the Association for Health Services Research (now AcademyHealth). He is scientific advisor to and a member of the national Blue Cross Blue Shield Association’s Medical Advisory Panel, as well as a member of the American Society for Clinical Investigation, the Association of American Physicians and the Institute of Medicine. He directs the Health Care Program of the National Bureau of Economic Research, and he recently completed his term as the chair of the Medicare Evidence Development and Coverage Advisory Committee of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.
