MESSAGE FROM GEORGE PAZ, CHAIRMAN & CEO EXPRESS SCRIPTS

Dear Visitor:

Welcome to the Center for Cost-Effective Consumerism!

A Bit of Background…

Following the availability of generic Zocor® (simvastatin) in mid-2006, Express Scripts engaged
in an innovative communications program that relied on insights from the behavioral sciences.
The result was a six-fold increase in the use of generic anti-cholesterol drugs – from 8 percent
to more than 52 percent in February 2008 – and more than $600 million in savings for our plan sponsors and members.

Interestingly, our research team found that this program was nearly two to three times more effective than financial incentives alone. Financial incentives, although important, are only part of
the story when it comes to driving change – we must better understand the basis for consumer behavior, and apply those insights to deliver innovative and proven tools.

The Center for Cost-Effective Consumerism

Guided by these findings, we’ve established the Center for Cost-Effective Consumerism. The Center will accelerate development of an advanced understanding of consumers to improve the way they use health care.

The Center for Cost-Effective Consumerism fuses Express Scripts’ industry-leading research capabilities with insights from a multidisciplinary advisory board of national experts in the science of human behavior and decision making. They are leading thinkers on how to structure and promote effective consumer programs.

The Center is committed to continually developing insights about what drives consumer behavior and translating those insights into practical tools to improve how consumers use the pharmacy benefit, stay compliant with their medications and save money. As a result:

  • Plan sponsors will maximize their generic fill rate, drive to the most cost-effective delivery channel, improve compliance in key therapy classes and improve member satisfaction; and

  • Members will take greater advantage of savings opportunities and realize better health outcomes through improved adherence in key therapy classes.

Now more than ever, we recognize the importance a sustainable, high-quality pharmacy benefit for working Americans. We look forward to sharing these insights with you.
